We are a friendly bunch with a mixed membership ranging from just interested amateurs to professional ecologists . We monitor sites throughout the counties from Ambersham in the west to Mallydams Wood in the east.  We monitor sites with rare  smooth snakes and sand lizards as well as the commoner species.

Through the warmer months we hold a series of events (pandemic permitting), which are free for you to join where an expert will be leading.  These events are mainly searching for reptiles and newt surveying. We also support  toad crossings such as Barcombe where 2000+ toads cross annually. We have members who have a particular interest in Brighton's amphibians
which are surprisingly numerous and include a toad crossing on a  pedestrian path!

Generally speaking we do not enter into negotiations on planning issues, or provide training such as GCN licensing. This is because as a small group  of volunteers we simply do not have the capacity to offer these services.

The Sussex Amphibian and Reptile Group (SxARG) was formed in 1986 with the aim of raising the profile and awareness of the amphibian and reptile species native to Sussex and to increase our understanding of them.  We are affiliated to Sussex Wildlife Trust  and to ARG UK.  SxARG helps Amphibians and Reptiles in Sussex by:  
  
     Collecting records and carrying out surveys to establish the distribution of native species
     Protecting important sites by providing advice to landowners and local authorities
     Educating and informing the public through displays, talks and using the media
    Organising field trips and volunteer conservation tasks
    Producing ‘newtsletters’. To keep members informed.
    Co-ordinating volunteers to help toads cross roads
    Contributing records to conservation bodies analyzing national population trends and contributing to the                        national database. 
   Representing SxARGs interests on the national Heathland Forum. Contributing to regional and National                          conferences concerning amphibian and reptile conservation.
